August 2013

Loli Salad’s Sixth Birthday…

… was two days ago.

I forgot! _(:3」∠)_
Well, I realized the anniversary was at the end of August but not quite the end of August and I didn’t realize that until, well, today actually. So… whoops! I was busy with ToX and before that SRIV and before that Salty Bet and during all of that, I was also working on a super-sneaky-top-secret project. But excuses, excuses. I’m about to talk about how much I love this stupid thing and I couldn’t even remember it’s birthday. Terrible.

I’ll go over the same spiel as usual. I’m really happy to have made it this far because a lot of times I thought I would call it quits. I mean, I know I rarely post but it’s because I rarely post that I felt this way. Still it’s been six years and we haven’t even broken 500 posts. Oh… well that might not be completely true. There were 500 posts but sometimes, looking back, things are so cringeworthy I just delete them without thinking. It’s older stuff (so now there’s no January 2008 posts) and I’m not proud of it but I know I should stop. Haha.

But you know what? This year I thought the site was gone. There was an error, and it seemed as if everything had been deleted. I had no proper backups to speak of at the time and I was shocked. At first I accepted it and thought it was alright since it wasn’t as if I updated on even a semi-regular basis and there would be nobody who would miss Loli Salad. But that wasn’t true. I would miss it. After it sunk in that something I had spent six years on was gone, I was incredibly saddened. Thinking I had truly lost something I worked hard to create, I think I probably even shed tears. Of course we’re here today so THANKFULLY things got fixed and I learned a very valuable lesson about backups. But I’m kind of happy I had an authentic “lose it to realize how much it means to you” experience that ended well.

I know I’ve probably said this before but having a place to talk about whatever I want is really nice. And even if I’m embarrassed by the past, I want to keep going. Even if it’s only a handful of posts a month. If they’re posts I’m proud of then that’s fine with me.

How deep does this corny, corny rabbit hole go? Much deeper. I also wanted to say that I myself have changed a lot since I first created this thing when I was, uh, fourteen. So yeah I guess obviously I’ve changed, haha. I mean when I created this aniblog… I didn’t actually watch… anime. I watched an episode here and there but I was young and had much better things to do. Well not really. I was just as much of as loser then as I am now. But I loved anime. I loved learning about it. I could tell you everything about a show but only ever watch one episode of it.

Eventually somewhere down the road things changed and I actually started watching it. Once I started watching series from the current season as they aired, I couldn’t stop. And I didn’t. A lot of things changed in life for me. People came and people left, I moved from place to place and graduated and started working and became an adult. Things didn’t and don’t stop changing. Just like anime, I guess. Which feels really dumb to say. But looking forward to each new season, lamenting shows past and being excited about those to come is a valuable way to pass time to me. Because of that I’ve met a lot of cool people and had a lot of neat experiences.

I can’t say that a day won’t come where I’ll finally grow out of this lifestyle and wonder why I spent so much time and money on something so frivolous. Sometimes, I think that now. I look around my disgusting room and think, “wow, this is gross”. But that doesn’t mean I want to tear everything off my walls and sell my figures. A gross person? That’s just who I am. A time when I’ll really want to change and when I grow out of the things I like? That time isn’t now. Because I know right now my life is full of uncertainties but I’m still certain this is what makes me happy. So here’s to another year, I guess!

Saimoe 2013 Picks

It’s that time again. Last year was such an abomination with Saki dominating right until the end. There are a lot of Saki characters in this year as well (though not nearly as many) so if it seems like it’s going that direction again I’ll probably stop paying attention altogether. Which is a shame.

As usual, I’ve gone through the list of contestants and made a few notes about my predictions and stuff. X’s are to give you a visual on just how many Sakis we’re dealing with this year (in retrospect I should have added a symbol for Girls und Panzer to compare), ♥’s are the characters I really like in that match and hope win (though in most cases it’s pretty damn unlikely), and ✔’s are who I predict I will win, whether I like it or not. I mostly went for the obvious choices and how well they fared in past tournaments.

  • the first match features what I assume is a bunch of nobodies. I mean, I can’t see any of those four shows having a big fanbase. So whoever wins is nothing but cannon fodder.
  • Mami undoubtedly has her match though I am a bit disappointed since Wakaba is my second favourite next to Aoi.
  • Not sure how popular Seitokai no Ichizon is and I couldn’t remember how well its characters did in past tournaments. I think Yozora probably has it though.
  • Precure characters traditionally haven’t done very well so I’m not putting much hope on them except for maybe Yayoi and her match is practically a walk in the park. I wouldn’t mind if Emi won though since I liked her originally and she isn’t a Saki.
  • I like Sasha and Chihaya and they’re both great characters but this is a tournament neither of them could ever succeed in. Glad that it’s Peace who has such an easy match though.

  • Ayase is the best Oreimo character (aside from her yandere tendencies, I guess). She probably has her match but I didn’t want to call it with a Yuruyuri in it.
  • Asuka vs. Homura vs. Nanoha. Probably the most interesting and hype match of the whole tournament, sadly. Asuka originally made it to the finals in 2002 (losing to Tomoyo and proving that people don’t always have terrible taste) but in her next match she lost to Golden Darkness so I doubt she stands a snowballs hell in chance against two juggernauts like Nanoha and Homura. The only time Nanoha didn’t make it to the finals was in 2008 when she lost to Shana (who again defeated her in 2010 when Nanoha returned to her groups final). Has Nanoha’s popularity waned enough to let a newcomer like Homura defeat her? Homura lost in the first round when paired against instant kill Misaka. It’d be nice if she could redeem herself so I’m pulling for Homura this time around.
  • Following that, Madoka is up against Yukari from Girls und Panzer. I imagine this will be a tough fight though a bit anticlimatic after Nanoha vs. Homura.
  • I like Mayuri but I had to go with Nap Girl on this one. Kumin is precious. Hopefully Rei and sher stupid giant ass doesn’t take it though.
  • Maki is one of the most popular Love Live characters (she did recently win the poll to be center on the 6th single) so I think she has this one.

  • Nibutani was my favourite Chuu2koi character so I hope she has this one. I doubt Christa will be much of a challenge and just how popular is Date a Live? Maybe I’m underestimating it.
  • LUCKY STAR. LUCKY STAR IN 2013. I don’t even know. Like. Who even cares about that anymore? Saori isn’t that bad and Squid Girl lost to a Saki last year so I’m hoping Squid Girl has this.
  • If Azuki Azusa and Tsukiko don’t totally dominate their matches I will be speechless. They’re both OK so I won’t mind if they win it all instead of a Saki. But you know, there have been a lot of up and coming popular gals that haven’t scored a real big victory so who knows. A few years ago I would have given up because I would be sure they had it but now? Not so much. Anything can happen, I guess.
  • Aoi is the best Vividred character but goddamn Kyouko probably will win.
  • I love Tamako Market and I love everybody in it so I’m obviously rooting for all of of the characters from it. Tamako’s match might not be that difficult but that might be wishful thinking. It probably is.

  • Kotori is another popular Love Live character so I don’t think she should have trouble.
  • I really don’t want Koromo to win because she’s one of the more powerful Sakis. I think Kyouko is just popular enough that she should stand a chance.
  • This group is really dull.

  • Another dull group.
  • Dekomori vs Karuta: I’m pretty sure I don’t need to repeat this anymore but AS LONG AS THE SAKI DOESN’T WIN. I would rather Karuta because all Dekomori is good for is being annoying and being Nibutani’s girlfriend.
  • Hayate is my fave Nanoha character and she’s always done pretty well. Her first round is usually against low-level characters like this and she can dominate popular characters in the second round but she’s had some trouble on group three. Well, one step at a time!

  • Has Kirino fall into disgrace like she has over here? Even so, Watashi doesn’t stand a chance and Kurisu has only done slightly well in the past but hey she’s still done better than Kirino. Kirino only made it to round two in 2011 and she lost to Index. WHICH WAS AWESOME.
  • Makoto best imas.
  • One hit kill Mikoto probably has her match but Nagi is a tough one to beat. Nagi made it to the grand finale twice. One losing to Rika and then to Azusa. Beyond that her worst is always stage three. Misaka’s worst was her first tournament appearance where she lost, surprisingly, to a Saki. Her other two appearances were then both group finals where she lost to Astarotte and Azusa, who went on to defeat Nagi. I take back what I said about Nanoha vs. Homura being the only interesting match. This will stain one of them with the disgrace of losing in the first match. It’s almost historic. Though, since Railgun just aired (it’ll be over by the time this match rolls around) I think it will still have revived everybody’s Mikasa ‘feels’ (ugh) and Mikasa will probably win. Though you know me, rooting for Nagi all the way!

  • Rin is my favourite Love Live character (AND WITH GOOD REASON) and I doubt she would stand a chance against most but against Kuroneko she’s especially going down. What a shame.
  • Tsukiko match, nobody survives.
  • I didn’t know how to call SAO matches. Is it obnoxiously popular over there still as it is here? Will those girls destroy their matches and I’ve made a terrible mistake? Well in any case, I assume Asuna for sure has her match underwraps. Sorry Yukari.
  • Choi woo Choi!
  • Kanna woo Kann- oh. Hi, Saten.
  • Only two Milky Holmes characters. Sad. But after how bad S3 is, I don’t blame you. Hercule made it to round three in her first appearance and had surprisingly took out Eclair from Dog Days and Laura Bodewig but lost, unsurprisingly, to Madoka. Sherlock has had terrible luck so far though. First appearance she was placed against Kuroneko and second tournament she made it to round two but lost to Astarotte. I’ll be hoping for both of them!
  • And the Index match. Always most important to me. Her first two tournaments saw her lose in the first round to Azusa (who, again, went on to win that year) and Kanade the next year. 2011 she fared better and defeated Kirino and Eila which I thought impossible. Eventually she lost to Kyouko from Madoka. This year doesn’t seem very promising since Akari and Chinatsu are both main characters and all. I’m really hoping the votes will be split between them and Index will prevail.

  • I like Maria and Yukino but I don’t know if they’re strong enough to take their respective matches.
  • How popular was Hyouka with 2ch? Imas didn’t do as strongly as I had projected a few years ago and I doubt it’ll do that good this year as well so I think maybe Chitanda will have a shot?
  • Anko is adorable but Ayumu is was a strong performer. In recent years she hasn’t even made it past round one, losing to Yuuki Kataoka and Yui Hirasawa. Maybe Anko does have a shot after all.

So there we go. There’s how I feel about THAT. Will Saki dominate again? Will Girls und Panzer steal the show? Hopefully not but hey. There are two big, interesting matches that I’m actually really excited about. Which is nice since my interest has been dwindling for awhile.

Mid-Season Impressions

I don’t normally do mid-season posts unless it’s about specific shows like Gargantia last season or Kaminai this season. However, I’m watching so much this time and most of it is really good! So I’d like to express how I feel now before the series ends and I become more and more disenchanted as they go on.

So, in order of shows I’m enjoying least to shows I’m enjoying most:

10. Futari wa Milky Holmes

This is terrible. I didn’t like S2 of Milky Holmes but at least it wasn’t this. This… this is just terrible. Is there anybody actually enjoying this? I mean, how could you possibly?

9. Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou

I was really excited for this show after that first PV. Now… I just can’t stand it. The character designs are neat but gross at the same time. The characters are all dull and unlikable (well, I kinda don’t mind Luna). It pretty much copies Mami’s death scene for scene. It wants the success of Madoka without having what made Madoka interesting. Very disappointed.

8. Attack on Titan

I haven’t been enjoying this show as much lately because I don’t think Eren is that interesting. Armin was pretty cool in episode 17 too. I want more of Armin being a badass, please. I was spoiled for the remainder of the series so I’m really just itching to see that stuff animated. I’m hoping the show will catch up to where the manga is instead of having to wait for the inevitable second season. I’m still really enjoying the soundtrack though.

7. Dangan Ronpa

Dang Ropes isn’t a visual masterpiece. Most of the time it looks like they put in the minimal amount of work required of them or else ripped from the game itself. The characters aren’t exactly the most deep people you could hope to meet either. Still, it’s mildly entertaining and there are worse ways to pass 20 or so minutes.

6. Blood Lad

As much as I love and enjoy Blood Lad, I’ve had trouble getting motivated to watch it. Still, when I do watch it I enjoy it well enough. It’s just kind of discouraging that it would be with a series I like so much that I come to learn of The Brains Base curse. It had never occurred to me before. Brains Base never, ever does sequels. Unless it’s Natsume, of course. Is that why Spice and Wolf never got a season three? If only they hadn’t switched studios. It’s even more of a disappointment since Blood Lad seems to only be 10 episodes long. So it’s like I’m trying not to get attached to something that won’t last.

5. Doki Doki Precure

I’ve liked each girl getting individual focus as they get stronger but special mentions to Rikka’s episode must be made. I love Rikka, ok. I was a pretty big ManaRitsu fan even though ManaRegina was pretty cute. People have been shipping IraRitsu for awhile but I didn’t really get it until now. It’s actually really cute! Because it wasn’t just about the Precures and their focus. It also showed the original bad guys being, not so bad. Though they went back to their old ways, it probably means they’ll do something nice for the Precures in a big battle and I think that’ll be cool. I don’t want to focus on shipping but I really do hope there are some more IraRitsu moments in the future…

4. Rozen Maiden

I’m biased because I always have and always will love this series. Not sure how I feel about the second series though. I was shocked when it seemed like the Shinku older Jun knew might just be Kirakishou but then it seemed like that wasn’t the case. With the arrival of a new book, maybe it really is? It was kind of nice seeing Suigintou and Megu and then Suigintou not being a huge angsting bitch with Shinku for a few seconds at least.

On the one hand, it feels like things won’t be properly resolved by the end of the series run. Since I doubt the second manga has finished it’s run that isn’t very surprising, I guess. But, at the same time, there has been hardly any Suiseiseki and that’s a wonderful thing.

3. Kaminai

I’m still enjoying this show, surprisingly enough. It’s ok for what it is. As I said before, the first few episodes rushed their relationship so the episode three death lacked much impact but the ED was so good I just don’t care. Likewise, it adds a bit to the end of episode five. The show has some interesting ideas and the setting is pretty cool though I doubt we’ll see enough of the world in the short run this show has. The characters still don’t do that much for me though. Ai is alright and Yuri is pretty cool and I adore Scar but everyone else introduced in the new arc is pretty damn boring.

2. Gatchaman Crowds

Of course! Who doesn’t love this show? It’s fun, great character designs, great soundtrack (Taku Iwasaki with a Yuri Kasahara track aaaaaa) and most importantly, Hajime! I can’t believe there are people who don’t like Hajime. I think she’s wonderful. She just… she just DOES things. I love that. She doesn’t angst about it or get freaked out and yell about it. She gets new powers? Neat! Tries ’em out! Sure, this behaviour isn’t very realistic but it’s refreshing to watch. Not to mention she’s just a good person and I love her ability to look at things from different perspectives. Gosh I just love Hajime.

There’s a lot of intrigue in this show as well. Katze and whatever he’s up to as well as Rui and the world he created in an attempt to better the one they live in. It’s very admirable though it seems like it was foreshadowing that because of the influence GALAX has, it might lead people to do wrong. Since those things Rui created seem to be powered by the people on GALAX, it’s likely he’ll just lose control of them and lo, Hajime and co. will have to fight them at the end. It’s a bit sad since I don’t think Rui is probably a bad guy and his ambitions do seem to be quite noble. Really, I did feel bad for him at the end of episode four. I’m hoping that isn’t the thing that makes him snap and start doing bad things.

1. Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C³

The best way to describe c3bu for me is to compare it to a pool. You’re wading into it, thinking it’s pretty shallow when suddenly it drops off! You recover yourself and think, “man, that got deeper than I expected really quick!” it’s not the depth of the ocean floor but it’s just not as shallow as you would have thought. I really, really thought this was going to be a cash in on the Girls und Panzer popularity (though C3bu started serialization like a month before Girls und Panzer did, I believe) and maybe the fact that they chose to animate it was just that. I only gave it a shot because of Gainax and because Sawashiro was one of the main characters.

I was pleasantly surprised when the first two episodes were entertaining enough but was floored when three happened. Everything from them changing the opening to show the change in Yura to the actual content was wonderful. Yura’s fantasy was one thing but when Rento saw it and when history itself seemed to change as a result, things got weird. Weird in a good way, though. As of episode five I feel like that will be a throw away episode and what they saw and what she did won’t matter and the series won’t have any further supernatural elements in it. Which is a shame since it would be a nice twist.

Episode five appeared to just be a beach episode but it continued being secretly fantastic. I expected Yura to join the club and that was that. Her anxieties gone. She gave up one fight and that was her big thing to overcome. Now it’s just cute girls doing cute things. But Yura’s regret from giving up, her fear of losing her friends and being like she before are both so intense that it changes her destructively. To where the game is not just about having fun. I expected her, in the previous episode, to shoot the opposing solider and it would have been a darker moment than I thought possible. That he was trying to teach her what it meant to survive. That would give her behaviour even more of a darker edge.

However, Sonora will probably just beat some sense into her, give her another lesson or Yura really will become destructive and see the errors of her way and it’ll be way less intense than I’ve made it out to be in my head. Still, I’m impressed it managed to make Yura seem so much more complex than she is. Good for you, show. Good for you.
