Stuff like this is the most unoriginal thing to post about but I haven’t done a post EXACTLY like this in all this time so now is as good as ever! One about EDs and actual OSTs (which will be a little more in depth, hopefully) will be soon to follow.
Super Affection (Carnival Phantasm)
I was never a big Type-Moon fan (despite my undying love for Arc) but I decided to check this out FOR KICKS. When I saw the OP I was smitten. It was the catchiest, most danceable thing I’ve seen in awhile. I had to watch it every episode. How can you deny the cuteness of it? The out of characterness?
Catch You, Catch Me (Card Captor Sakura)
It was a tough choice between the three but I couldn’t justify picking the second because when I watched it I really disliked it. The third is actually my favourit eand the animation for it is much more interesting but the first opening, Catch Me, Catch You is iconic enough that it represents the series much better than Platinum does. I am barely able to contain myself from rewatching this again.
Bokurano is an anime I love to pieces even though it diverging from the manga makes it one giant flaw. I almost feel bad for praising it like I do because I’m too afraid to actually read the manga. That being said, if there was another adaption that did follow the show I’d probably die. Uninstall is a pretty popular song and is remixed over and over and is in a ton of medley and every Vocaloid covers it (because of irony?) and it is a good song, yes. The actual opening is really simple and just shows scenes from the show but it’s the song that has always done it for me. Though I think the simpleness of it compliments the song and they go hand in hand to making each other perfect.
My Soul, Your Beats (Angel Beats!)
Me and Angel Beats have had a rocky relationship but I will always and forever love the opening. Lia songs like this are just always so fantastic. Visually, a lot of it was really pretty and it helped show off all the characters as well as episode clips which I always thought was a nice touch.
Meiya Kadenrou (Katanagatari)
Oh surprise surprise, Katanagatari. I just. I just love Katanagatari so much, okay? Again, visually amazing. Shouldn’t really stand out for being super colourful since the whole show is but it just is. It’s vibrant. The song is nice too and easily my favourite Kuribayashi song. The chorus never fails to get me pumped and energetic.
While I’ve always been disappointed that the full version of Obsession never sounded quite the same as the TV size version, it’s still a great song. Visually, I always loved the showcasing of characters that start to glitch out as well as their descent afterwards.
Kinjirareta Asobi (Rozen Maiden)
I have to give this one out of nostalgia and credit. I do like it but I was absolutely never forget that seeing this at my first convention when I was at my weebyest was what lead me to where I am today (the cynical might ask if that is a good thing, though). Seishoujo Ryouiki has better imagery but Kinjirareta Asobi has a mysterious air about it that the whole first season had but was lacking in the second season. The second season lacked a lot of things. I could write forever about how and why the second season fails in comparison to the first and my old, inner Rozen Maiden fangirl would be brought back but I’ll save that for another day.
Hyadain no KakakataKataomoi-C (Nichijou)
SURPRISE x2. Well I love Nichijou and the OP (both of them, actually) was just so out there and over the top just like the show. Everything about it was fitting. It showed pretty much every character doing the stuff that made them so great. Tough choice because both songs are great but I had to go with the first.
Euphoric Field (ef ~ a tale of memories)
I will probably never get over what a beautiful OP this is. It is classically SHAFT though and you can find most of the same visuals (use of colour, silhouettes) in other openings by them but this one was always special. I love the English version of the song but the version of the opening that uses the Japanese song and has the girl’s respective partners catch them instead of having them crumble away gets more praise. That particular scene has always been really beautiful to me for some reason.
H.O.T.D (Highschool of the Dead)
I will forever hate to admit what an entertaining (if incredibly stupid) show Highschool of the Dead was. I did enjoy ichigo doing the OP though. It was one of those ones I had to watch every episode. Visually, the OP is actually pretty nice too. Interesting use of colour, nice action and, of course, fanservice.
– Black Rock Shooter (Black Rock Shooter): I got so excited when I saw they actually used the song that I think I could have passed out. I’ve stated my problems with the show in the past but the OP always excited me and made me hope for better things/
– Beagle (Kokoro Library)
– Paradiso (Michiko to Hatchin): I was tempted to tie this Baccano but opted to include neither of them (though I do like the Baccano OP more). It’s catchy and incredibly stylish and I could just watch it all day.
– Guns & Roses (Baccano): I didn’t include this one because this is like a free pass. Who doesn’t like the Baccano op? Someone terrible that’s who. It helps keep track of the huge cast and it’s the catchiest thing.
– Resonance (Soul Eater)
– Tori no Uta (Air): I almost feel like a traitor for not listing this one. I used to think this song was just the most beautiful thing. Well I was younger then but I do still take this song away as the best part of Air.
– Over Soul (Shaman King)
– Mitsu no Yoake (Spice and Wolf II): I love both seasons OP but the second season gets points for always making me want to cry when I hear the chorus.
– Nante Jibun de Kangaenasai na (Arakawa Under The Bridge): Delicious Sawashiro
