A Look Back at 2012 pt. 2

The worst movie I watched this year followed by the best movie I watched this year.

Howl’s Moving Castle

SHAMEFUL SECRET: this was the oldest ghibli movie I’d seen before my secret santa rec. I’d seen Ponyo and Arrietty before this and thought they were OK but nothing to really write home about. Then one day I decided to watch this. Best spur of the moment decision ever. I loved it to pieces. Everything about it was so fantastic and wonderful and I really want to watch it again. Please release it over here in BD!

Inu x Boku SS

I had mixed expectations going into IxB and this seems like a bit much to say but it kind of defied my genre expectations and messed them all up for the rest of time. I’m so used to ship tease that actually seeing them get together was so amazing to me. It’s both a blessing and a curse that this show will probably never get a second season because then I can believe they lived happily ever after instead of (spoilers) in the  manga  where all but one of the main cast is killed. I loved every character in the show but none as much as Nobara. Truly a woman of fine taste.

Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita

Such a clever show. Sometimes I felt as if that was lost on me. I loved the pastel art style and I loved Watashi. I didn’t expect such a dry, cynical girl and Mai Nakahara did such a great job with her. One of the finest and most original shows in a long time.

I liked Jormungand a lot more than I ever expected I would. Near the end I was kind of iffy about it because Koko’s plan was so ridiculous and I missed the days of shooting stuff and being badasses all the time. Still, a pretty fun ride even though I was a bit disappointed with the ending.

Kamisama Kiss

Fluffy shoujo romcom was exactly what I needed from the final season of the year. I’m going to miss Kurama (only because of his theme song). Shame it’ll probably never got another season.

Kokurikozaka kara

This was the other Ghibli movie I watched this year. It was… really boring. And pretty melodramatic. I liked the clubhouse scenes and I was happy that worked out but it just wasn’t as enjoyable as I would have hoped. I’ve always hated when people complain about new anything sucking but the older Ghibli movies just seem to be so much better than the newer ones.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: The Movie 1st

When I was much younger (like 12), I thought Nanoha’s transformation scene was too lewd so I saw bits and parts of the original and A’s. Awhile later I watched StrikerS though. I watched this on my plane ride home from LA and it was pretty good. Once again, let me state my love of movies that retell the story of a show I have no interest in watching. They make my life so much easier.

Michiko to Hatchin (post)

Though there were a few unsatisfying aspects to the ending, they weren’t detrimental to my enjoyment of the series when I look back at it. Interesting characters go to interesting places and do interesting things. What more could you ask for? Waiting warmly for Funi’s release.

 Natsuyuki Rendezvous

Started off strong and I loved it but as time went on, I liked it less and less. By the final episode I was kind of creeped out (what will the whole “let’s eat his bones” and then licking her neck or whatever happened). I liked the scene at the end where Shimao  seemed like he was going to possess the kid. That would have been interesting, if he had. It’s a little sad that it seemed he was never able to pass on. Had he watched them all that time? Anyways, I was pretty disappointed by the end.

Nazo no Kanojo X

I was kind of iffy about this one. It gave me some mixed up feelings and I didn’t really like the Protag. Oka was a great character though. It had a wonderful OST though. Still disappointed that random figure they showed in one of the dream world sequences at the beginning didn’t matter. What was even up with all that anyways? Did you play an important part to the story that go hand in hand with Mikoto’s mysteriousness? Or were they just a commentary on the themes of that episode? Will I ever know without reading the manga? Who knows.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Movie: Gurren-hen and Lagann-hen

A few months ago I really, really wanted to watch TTGL. Wanting to save myself some time, I decided to just watch the movies. The second movie kind of dragged on but it was worth it to see everybody get their own Tengen Toppa Gunmen. The first movie as well had all of the generals attack as well which had Yoko vs. Adiane which was the highlight of the movie without a doubt.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (post)

I still regret being spoiled before watching this since the big dramatic plot twist seemed so obvious when I knew what was actually happening (though I guess that could be said of anything you get spoiled for). 10/10 would cry again.

Zestuen no Tempest

Well actually I dropped this so I don’t really have any right to talk about it. It does seem interesting but Mahiro and Yoshino are just so dull. I can’t stand Mahiro at all. I wanted to watch for Hakaze because I love me some Sawashiro but she falls in love with Yoshino and really? Really?? Aika and her murder (though probably at the hands of her brother) are the only truly interesting things about the show. Which is a shame because it has some cool ideas and is just really pretty.
