Another year, another celebration. Same old, same old. To be honest I wanted to celebrate this a bit more but I was lazy. Now I barely have any time left now that I’ve started working full time and have to find new and creative ways to fit an appropriate amount of sleep and Tales of Xillia 2 into my daily routine. I’m having a bit of a tough time at it right now and I hope that I adapt but if seems like things slowed down even more than usual, well that’s why. Though I just did start about a week ago and that doesn’t really account for why I didn’t post anything all August…
Moving along, I’ll give the same spiel I usually do. More than anything else, this has been a place for me to talk about the things that catch my eye. Whatever they may be. Sometimes (ok alright like I wasn’t paying attention or I totally wouldn’t have posted two Korra posts back to back) it’s not even anime related stuff. But there’s always been the few that have followed for a long time for whatever reason and of course I want to thank you.
One thing that surprises me when I meet people who have read this is that I sometimes get called a music reviewer. I’ve always thought that’s pretty funny, to be honest. I’m not really good at that. I don’t know much about music at all and I’m not entirely confident enough to say “yeah this is the best of the best” so everything is just a suggestion. Besides, I only post music I like. A reviewer would post anything and everything ,yeah? I only want to share the music I like. When people say they discovered something because of a post I did, it makes me really happy. So that’s been motivation for a long time.
But with that in mind, I wanted to post a little something something, especially because seven is my favourite number. That means we have to celebrate some how!
Fang-tan’s Top 7 Albums* from the Last 7 Years
*that I’ve mentioned or posted about on Loli Salad. This excludes the handful of Taku Iwasaki OSTs I would have included.

I cannot remember for the life of me how I would have come to known of this album but I’m constantly thankful that I got the chance to hear it.

It’s probably one of my favourite games in the whole world and this album manages to capture the unique feel of the game pretty amazingly. They manage to do a lot of interesting things with a bunch of short, simple loops that the game uses as music while keeping in line with the theme and scenes in the game (Disregard is so fantastic and that transtion into ああああああああああああ never gets old). So while there may never be very many albums arranging this music, at least we got this album that did it so, so right.

Sure, Jin’s tuning of IA is certainly not the best but I’ve always found some charm in how awkward she sounds. I’m hard pressed to say this features the best songs from the series because Kagerou Days, Toumei Answer, Imaginary Forest, Konoha’s State of the World and Shinigami Record aren’t on it.On the other hand, Ayano’s Happiness Theory. Man. I love me some Ayano and it’s because of that song obviously. Not to mention if we’re going with a bubbly song from KagePro, I’m going to have to go with Yuukei Yesterday. There was just so many great hits on this one that had such impact both outside of their relevancy to the story and just in general as songs. And of course, Ayano’s Happiness Theory. That’s a big deal.

There’s more of a backstory to this one and maybe I’ll do an actual post about this or include it in a partial soon.Originally I fell in love with the Higurashi Motion Graphics years and years ago. Like 2005 was when the 1st one came out? That predates this blog by a few years so yeah I was kinda young. Originally I disliked the UMG, foolishly and childishly declaring they weren’t as good as the original HMG series. Of course I ended up loving them and looking for each release at Comiket along side each Umineko game.Interestingly enough, I never finished the series because I fell out of love because I hadn’t liked the direction. What’s interesting is that though ALTERNAIT and the gang had released a video with each release, it was about when they stopped that I started to dislike the series. Still, this collection of majority (I believe one or two was released afterwards) of the UMG songs holds a special place in my heart from when I did enjoy the series and had these to look forward to.

Of course, the following year they released it on Bandcamp so if YOU want to buy it you can for the low, low price of $15.I’ve had people ask me “ok but is this really an OST for something or what” and I don’t know. I don’t know the circumstances or series or story relating to this album. I just know I heard a crossfade and fell in love. Dark ambient with horror vibes and experimental industrial sound? I was smitten. I became obssessed utnil I ordered it because I was sure, at the time, I would never have a chance to listen to it fully without doing so. I don’t regret it. It’s still great.

I love you but I love nagi even more.Plus this album has her cover of Uninstall so like…?? It’s as amazing as you’d think. Plus a cover of Renai Circulation so take that how you will. But no, covers aside, it really showcased what makes her so excellent. The mamemoi album would have also sufficed to be honest because that was another stellar release by her that I loved.

Yes, you’ve got on.It was a tough choice between the three albums but I had to pick this one if only for obscure which is hands down the track that made me fall for spctrm and his magical ways. It was also this album and circle that inspired a newfound love of folk instrumental and orchestral tracks. It certainly was the one that made it hard to listen to Touhou afterwards.
