12 Days of Anime: #02 – Goodbye’s Too Sad and Way Too Lonely

The Mekakucity Actors anime sure was… sure wasn’t the best. That’s for sure. It was OK for the most part. Average. They butchered (but fixed for the BD thankfully) Ayano’s Happiness Theory, Kagerou Days ended up looking really awkward, things got really rushed at the end and could have used more explaining, an epilogue along with Summertime Records playing would have been swell and look, I can go on for days with what was wrong with the show so I’m going to stop.

However, it wasn’t all bad.

SHAFT trying to make it a lot more Monogatari-ish (lots and lots of static dialogue with less animation) may have turned some people away from the show and I’ll admit, it was an unusal choice. However, SHAFT did something that I don’t think any other studio would have done. One of the most creative things I’ve seen in a long time that reminded me just how good SHAFT can be when they want to be.

At the end of the Lost Time Memory episode in the titular song, they do one of the big reveals for the series which is that there have been multiple timelines where these events happen over and over and Marry is involved some how and woah all kinds of information that doesn’t really make much sense for new viewers, I imagine.

But it’s the presentation that’s so spectacular and blew me away. I recall I was too excited to wait until I got home so as soon as I left work that day I watched it at my bus stop and on the bus and I was freaking out and trying to stay calm on the bus because of how amazingly cool this was done.

The multiple timelines are represented by the other forms of media that make up the Kagepro series. The original music videos, the manga and the light novel. The song shows all of these things to show things like the gang discovering all this on their own, going to the amusement park (I was looking forward to that part but alas) to the gang getting slaughtered by Kuroha.

I still can’t get over how cool it was for them to do it like that! As a fan of the series, it was beyond pleasing.

It doesn’t hurt that the Lost Time Memory cover is probably the best cover they used in the show. After the montage of the past worlds/other media, there’s the Ayano saying goodbye bit which does happen in the original music video but also Medusa Marry which was a SHOCKING TRUTH REVEAL to even people like me who knew the series. It was unexpected and the point where I threw up my hands and finally admitted “lmao I don’t know what’s going to happen anymore idk”.

The rest of the show might have been SUBPAR but I’m thankful that this awesome sequence exists.
